Stealing

Stealing typically involves the taking of another person’s property with the intention of permanently depriving the owner of the item but can also include using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent (joyriding). Stealing property worth less than $1000 can only be punished with a fine whereas more serious matters can result in lengthy prison terms.

The law provides a number of defences for people who take property under an honest belief that they are entitled to do so. The law on stealing can be complicated and it is important to seek legal advice if you are charged with a stealing offence.
