Is it Illegal to Pay Windscreen Washers for Washing my Windscreen at Traffic Lights?

You may not be surprised to hear windscreen washing at the traffic lights is illegal in Western Australia, but perhaps you might be surprised to learn that paying windscreen washers could land you in hot water!

The Road Traffic Act 2000 (WA) states that a driver OR passenger in a vehicle is not permitted to buy ‘an article or any service from a person who is on a carriageway’.

So while you may think there’s little harm in flicking a couple of bucks to the windscreen washers, it is illegal to do so.

Window washers are not only putting themselves in danger, but they can also create hazards for the driver by obstructing them.

If you wash someone’s windscreen on the road, or pay someone to wash your windscreen, you are breaking the law.
